The Energy Policy and Conservation Act, as amended (“EPCA”), prescribes energy conservation standards for various consumer products and certain commercial and industrial equipment, including Commercial Water Heating (“CWH”) equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulation takes effect on October 6, 2026, for commercial water heaters.
This regulation mandates a shift to condensing technology for nearly all new gas-fired commercial water heating equipment manufactured or imported on or after the compliance date.
‣ Gas-Fired Storage Water Heaters:
Minimum Thermal Efficiency (TE) increases
from 80% to 95%.
‣ Gas-Fired Instantaneous Water Heaters:
Minimum TE increases from 80% to 96%.
‣ Residential-Duty Commercial Gas Storage:
Must meet a new Uniform Energy Factor (UEF)
of 0.9297.
‣ Standby Loss:
New, more stringent maximum standby loss requirements also apply to storage models.
